I had run xf86config specifying no virtual screen and I was still having
the problem Mole describes until I switched the order of modes for the
default color depth (which is 8-bit unless you change something in
XF86Config). If it is left so that the lowest resolution is first on the
line, then you only see part of the screen - in my case I saw one quarter
of it because 640x480 was the default, but 1280 was the largest
resolution. I ran xf86config again and did not accept the modes (5) but
changed at least the line for 8-bit (1) to 432 - this gave me a 1024
screen and I could hit Ctl-Alt-+ to get back to the situation that Mole
describes.
