If I understand Steven's explanation of this, you need to have either only
one resolution listed for the color depth you are using, or have the
largest one listed first, for instance:

depth 16 (if you have specified this as the default, but you may only see
8-bit color which is the best I could do with my S3 Virge card and SVGA
server)

mode "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

Then startx will give you a display where you see the whole screen but if
you want to see parts of it larger, Ctl-Alt-+ increases resolution but
give you a 1024 virtual screen (what you are calling extended screen).

I had the same mouse problem when I chose the wrong mouse driver during
setup with xf86config. We had something labelled mouseport compatible.
Is your mouse on the list offered by xf86config? The default is PS/2.
I fixed the problem by changing to a standard PS/2 mouse.

But my real issue is i have a Logitech MouseMan Wheel /

Try a plain PS/2 mouse? We also have some computers where the PS/2 hole
(the thing you plug the mouse into) is in a slot cover connected by cable
to the board. You could also try a serial mouse but do not just hit Enter
for default mouse when doing setup, choose serial mouse (or Microsoft
mouse).
