There is definitely a way to center text in Ted: just keep looking.
Unfortunately, it's not installed on the machine I'm using at the moment,
so I can't say precisely how. But I know I did centering on a document I
created and it worked. As for other wordprocessors: have you looked at
Steven's statically compiled Abiword (at my download site as well as his)?
It's a rather large download (6MB, I believe), but Steven favors Abiword
over Ted, so you might want to check out his preference in word
processors.
