Doug gives us permission to use his pdftotext compiled with mkstemp
(non-X) but it cannot be posted without the accompanying README, COPYING
and man pages. I asked him to make a package including these but his
mailbox is full (this has happened before and it can take him a week to
notice) so my mail came back.
Please also read about his attempts to make pdftotext work better by
compiling it for X. I don't think the X version would be suitable for use
with Lynx as a downloader.

I don't have any problem with the distribution, but it should be
done in conformance with the license from the author. I am appending
the section from the README file which gives the conditions of
distribution. I am not sure if he means that all the man pages have to
be distributed, or just those for the selected binaries that you make
available. Note that xpdf is distributed under GPL, so you can always
distribute if you include the source code. The binary is from the
current version, "2.02". Let me know if you don't have the man pages,
README, or COPYING files.
I can make the problem with the hobal.pdf file go away if I use
version 1.01 compiled with X, but then you lose all the improvements
(including security improvements) added since then. I can't get
version 2.02 to compile with X on my machine, since version 2 is
dependent on "Motif" which isn't installed on my machine.

Distribution
------------
Xpdf is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL), version
2. In my opinion, the GPL is a convoluted, confusing, ambiguous mess.
But it's also pervasive, and I'm sick of arguing. And even if it is
confusing, the basic idea is good.
In order to cut down on the confusion a little bit, here are some
informal clarifications:
- I don't mind if you redistribute Xpdf in source and/or binary form,
as long as you include all of the documentation: README, man pages
(or help files), and COPYING. (Note that the README file contains a
pointer to a web page with the source code.)
