Hi Folks,

Downloaded about a week to 10 days ago. Dated 12/04/03.

The INSTALL routine claimed to find all packages on my hard disk
mounted at /cd.

The installation routine ended with a series of:
zcat: invalid gzip magic
zcat: invalid gzip magic
zcat: etc. etc....

On boot up of the HD "installation", after all the line messages there
comes:

fsck: command not found
fsck returned error code - REBOOT NOW

followed by
Login: -takes any keys
Password: - takes a RETURN
followed by
crypt: Operation not supported.
then several lines followed by the familiar RAM installation-type log in
prompt.

I found the directory called packages - all the installation packages
are listed, but all of 0 bytes except for the one called BL2-base (?).

This is the third time I have re-formatted the drive, partitioned it,
formated to Linux native and "installed" BL2-02. I know some of it is
being installed, because I can navigate among the files, mount my other
(DOS) hard drive and stuff like that. I even tried to go onto the net -
I got as far as dialling my ISP but failed to log on.

But still no recognition of pkgtool or installpkg - command not found.

If it is this difficult to get the base installed, how will I ever get
to run a window-mangler ? Or graphical Links ? Or, what I really
want to learn Linux for - MUSIC ?????

Regards,
Ron

Downloaded the packages. This machine doesn't even have a CD drive.

ALL the packages are listed there, and NONE of them have any files in
them. I have since checked every one of those packages
(as in gunzip -t xxx.tgz) and every one without exception got the thumbs
down - invalid tgzp magic.

I guess this is the reason.

Don't know why, they were downloaded from legit slakware mirrors, in at
least three different sessions, and using Arachne and WizLynx on
different days.

They were downloaded by, and into, a DOS system. Then loaded onto an
external ZIP drive for transfer into the target machine.
Would that have caused any damage to all but the BL2-02.ZIP ?

Ron

Ron:

Could your problem be related in any way to file renaming? When Linux fi=
les get saved to DOS/fat16 media, filenames can be butchered. Most notor=
iously, the linux file names get procrusteanized to the DOS 8/3 naming co=
nvention. Then, caps can get changed to lower case, which will throw Lin=
ux for a loop. This is sort of a long shot, since it seems your problems=
may have other causes. But I thought I'd toss it in anyway, since I've =
had to rename files for such reasons in the past so that Linux could find=
and use them.
