Appears to me that לחם LEXEM refers to solid food. It is from LXM, 'coalesce, consolidate, fuse', the root also of מלחמה MI-LXAM-AH, 'struggle, combat' (come-beat). 

In present day Hebrew הלחמה HA-LXAM-AH is 'welding'.

In Mishnaic Hebrew we encounter לגם LEGEM, 'a mouthful of drink', reminding us of the גמא GAMA, 'gulp', of Gen. 24:17.
