Karl,
Since Sarai, Sarah, and Yisrael are all based on the root SRH lets look at
that only for now.
SRH to fix upon:
in wrestling there are takedowns, controls (holds), and reversals -
in Hebrew "the hold" is described by the verb SRH to wrestle (Gn32:29),
(Hs12:4);
the reversals and takedowns by ?BQ (entangle with eachother) to wrestle
(Gn32:25,26)
ShWR means (hold firmly in one's sights) to get a fix on (see)
(Nm23:9,24:17)(Hs14:9)(Jb,7:8,17:15,20:9,24:15,33:14,34:29,35:13)(SoS4:8)
to behold (Jb36:24) in Polael
S?R in Arabic = set out, move along, march, get going, be headed for s.th, be
directed / oriented, be guided by; route
ShRR = to direct (Jb37:3)
?ShR = to go intentionally / directly (Pr9:16); (Pr4:14) ;
to direct, lead (Is3:12;9:15)(Pr23:19)
to be directed / led (Is9:15)
ShRyR(hold firm) muscle (Jb40:16)
YShR = straight
The sense of all of these words is "to hold firm"
in some cases physically: to wrestle, muscle
in others visually. When you hold something firmly visually, we call that
FOCUSING.
When we follow our focus, we go directly, intently, and straight toward
something.
Tell me something, did I fabricate anything here? Perhaps, you can still
disagree with my conclusions as to what the names mean, but SRH, ShWR, SRR,
ShRR, ?ShR, YShR, mean these things.
Sincerely
David Kolinsky

George,
Not necessarily in support of Jim , but about what you wrote:
"...assume/demand that people be named at birth for something they do later
in life. THAT does not make sense."
… a characters names matching their achievements later in life makes perfect
sense. If this were not the case then why are so many characters so
frequently having their names changed in the context of the story.
Characters changing their name was quite rare in Tanakh. In fact, this
message here may list all of them.
Where do you get the definitions you claim?
Avram = exalted father AND one whose willingness (to engage life ) is
elevated
Avraham = one who spread his wings [?BR] in pursuit of stirring experiences
[HMH]
This name could very well be connected with roots that have long been
forgotten.
Sarai = one who focuses on many things (distractedly)
Sarah = one who focuses on one particular thing [SRH]
Where do you get this “focusing” from? More than one root is possible for
both names.
YaaQoV = one who grabs on to a thing, and examines and follows, traces a
thing, with critical thinking (see Arabic)
This name mean “crooked” as in dealing crookedly, see Genesis 27:36.
Yisrael = one who remains focused on G-d / what advances forward [SRH]
Again “focusing”? There are two or three roots that could fit here, none of
which fits your definitions here.
AND YES I KNOW THAT YOU ALL BELIEVE THAT MY ETYMOLOGIES ARE MORE THAN A
STRETCH AND SO YOU IGNORE MY POSTS, BUT REALLY DO YOU EVER EVEN STOP TO
CONSIDER THEM, OR DO YOU JUST DISREGARD THEM OUT OF HAND
As a lexicographer, I find most of them unbelievable. Yes, I have written a
dictionary from Biblical Hebrew to English, part of my personal studies.
Thus, I find that most of your etymologies are stretched beyond the breaking
point.
No offense meant to anyone on the list, but perhaps your belief in the
paradigm taught to you prevents you from looking close enough to see what is
being said.
Being mostly self-taught, I am following what I notice in the text and
language. Not having been indoctrinated into any particular school of
scholarship, I am free to call it as I see it. My call here is that your
definitions are wide of the mark.
With respect,
David Kolinsky

Melchizedek was not the only non-Israelite priest to be mentioned favorably.
There are also Jethro, priest of Midian, and Potiphera priest of On. But all
three are non-Israelite and pre-Sinai. In other words, either only Israelite
priest must be Aaronide, but gentiles, if they are in fact priests of God, of
course would not have to be, or non-Aaronides were okay so long as Aaron had
not yet been consecrated, but once he was, only he and his descendants could
be priests. Take your choice.

It seems to me that Psalm 110 comes into play here as well, since it
specifies a non-Aaronic priesthood as having YHWH's approval. Interesting
stuff.
