Kevin, the whole purpose of the story is to show that God, who was fighting for the Israelites, has the power to alter the course of nature and is willing to do so for His people. This proves, without doubt, that the victoy was God's, not Israel's. It was God who gave the Land to Israel, not Joshua's abilities as a general. Now you don't have to believe that it actually happened, but that is the message of the text. Saying that it just means that it was a cloudy day has no meaning and does not fit the context.

It's likely, or at the very least possible, that the expression Hebrew
for "sun/moon stopped" in Joshua 10 is simply an idiom, describing a
sky-covering storm. A similar idiom is found in Sumerian, as I
describe briefly here:
