[JSafrem] A horde of 2,000,000 stretching out 100-200 km wouldn't have been able to
see the pillar of fire, both because of the distance of most of the Israelites from
the pillar and because of the curvature of the earth.
And the fact remains that when people begin to move, it takes a while for the last
echelons to begin to move, especially when the column is 100-200 km long.

I don't know how high a piller of fire can get, but a pillar of smoke--
i.e. from a volcano--can reach up to 50,000 feet, which can theoretically
be seen from 275 miles away.
