Personally I wear a helmet when riding young/green horses.  Our MSAR unit wears helmets when doing crowd/traffic control projects.  We encourage all members to wear one at all times but unless we are in uniform and "working" we don't require it.  When out on a search it's also personal preference.  I will take one with me and if we get into a heavily wooded area I will put mine on to protect my noggin.
