I downloaded and unpackaged mplayerplug-in 3.31
from linuxpackages.net (which I think you said
you used)

No, I did not remember exactly where I got the
mplayerplug-in (although I did mention that it
is available at linuxpackages).

and it produced 5 so and 5 xpt files,

Yes, that's what I got too.

which I copied to firefox (as instructed by the
mozilla plugins documentation for linux).

You put them in the top firefox directory?
That's strange.

By 'firefox as instructed' I mean I copied them to

/firefox*/plugins and /firefox*/components,

Now when I run firefox, on exit I see that these
libraries require GTK2,

Right, it's GTK2. You obviously need the GTK1 version.

Linuxpackages 2.66 is also GTK2.

Steven, didn't you say you got version 3.31 and
also that you chose Firefox 1.5 to avoid gtk2?

Yes, I said I got version 3.31 because I understood
that was the version for Firefox 1.5. However, most
pre-compiled Firefox 1.5 packages were designed for
gtk2. Remember: I was only able to find one source
(in Japan) for a gtk1 Firefox 1.5.

Since most pre-compiled Firefox 1.5 packages were
gtk2, it makes sense that your mplayerplug-in was
gtk2. Obviously, I found a gtk1 version of the
mplayerplug-in. We just need to find it again.

I am looking for it now.

Me too. I found a DSL 4.4 posting where someone complained that their Firefox 'Bon Echo' 2 is GTK1 and the mplayer plugin is GTK2. Their advice was to upgrade to Firefox 3/GTK2.

If we will have the same problem with all plugins other than adblock, what do you think about installing GTK2 in BL2? Slackware 11 has it for glibc 2.3.6 (but Firefox 3 still did not load for me in SW11). It is larger than GTK1 but glibc 2.3.6 is larger than 2.3.1 and has proved useful.

The latest stable Seamonkey 1.1.15 is available for GTK1 or GTK2 (but 2 beta based on the same code as Firefox 3 I think only for GTK2).

The latest mplayer plugin (like Firefox 3) apparently will not compile with GTK1.

The old Mplayer GUI used GTK1.2 . With version 1.0pre8 and newer the (preferred) GUI uses GTK2.

To use the GKT1 gui you need to compile it yourself with --enable-gtk1.

To compile mplayer plugin you need the Mozilla development files (which for seamonkey were 365MB unpackaged) and gecko-sdk and GTK development files.

If we are jumping from Slackware 9 to Slackware 11 why not take that one additional step to GTK2 to avoid having to hunt so hard for precompiled programs (and plugins) that we can use with BL?

I found a precompiled gtk1 mplayer-plugin 3.55 for NetBSD.
