Nick has done a great job of exposing our repos to the web at http://cvs.sourcemage.org/, and Tony is doing quite well at http://www.smee.org:8080/.b) think about/start using VCP to sync up P4 and CVS repos;
c) I volunteer to setup a test Subversion repository
and script the export of CVS repos into it on the
periodic basis. This will require current apache2
2.0.40, current library called neon, current Python,
current PHP (if we need PHP on the same server), and
current Subversion. Each spell is available either in
existing grimoire, or from me (I have httpd-dev,
php-dev exporting code from live CVS repos, which are
not in the grimoire). Subversion is available now from
my section 'collab', but the latest build requires
httpd-dev and latest neon.
This would be nice, that way we can play with it and see if it's worth
switching to. We can also add web/cgi to CVS (through cvs-web, etc.) if
we do want to stick with CVS. I also recall Tony mentioning something
about a web interface for Perforce.
The problem here is not in the name, but in the dependencies. What needs to happen is major spell need to include 'provides' file with the same name as the spell itself, and all dependents need to use 'requires x' instead of 'depends x' in their DEPENDS. So, for instance, php spell will also "provide" php, and all spells that need it will 'require php' except for maybe some specific ones. Then, patched or "bleeding edge" php would be called php-dev, php-cvs, php-with-the-patch, and will also 'provide php'. Now, you can dispel php and cast php-dev, without breaking sorcery-enforced dependencies. With apache2, I managed to avoid dependency problems by 'providing webserver' (although I could still use 'provide httpd2' in addition to this), but no such luck with php: everything that depends on it, like e.g. xdebug spell that I submitted, when cast would bring original php in, not your php-dev.
Along these *-dev lines, should we have <spell>-cvs spells for those who
like to be on "the edge"? There have been a few times (PHP, for example)
where something I wanted wasn't in any of the releases, but only in CVS.
Ideas?
Generally, this may be a good way for development spell to replace stable onse on the same box.
