How about we make isos as follows

2.4 i386 non-NPTL
2.6 i386 non-NPTL

2.4 i686 non-NPTL
2.6 i686 NPTL

Then everyone is happy, if you want 2.6 without nptl out of the box,
you use the i386 version, if you nptl and 2.6 out of the box use the
i686 version.

(replace 686 with 586 if you can have nptl on a 586)
