Consider the liability factor. Forget green for ladders, staircases,
fire escapes, etc. Use welded/bolted steel with Trex steps, extra wide,
like two 5/4 X 6 Trex plants used for decking = 5/4 X 12. Other options
would include modern non toxic pre3ssure treated lumber combined with
Trex stair treads. Save the green for the rooftop. Dress the gardeners
in Jolly Green Giant costumes...

Other considerations might be redwood, cedar, locust lumber and resawn
fir bridge timbers for major structural elements, i.e. posts and
framework, risers and headers.

Fir beams were used in railroad trestles. I bought some 24' 8X24 beams
to use on landscape jobs years ago when a RR line was being taken out
and the trestle taken down. A cool Canadian came down here, worked
mostly by himself, burning bolts with his acetylene torch and using his
logger's knuckleboom loader to dismantle the beams and stack them for
local sale. Talk about recycling! That was a byegone era.
