Ew. What people dream up to do to one another! With that kind of imagination,
think of what we could do if it were channeled constructively.....

Linda, the torture was achieved by tying people to racks over bamboo in the
season when shoots emerge, the shoots grow incredibly fast and would grow
straight through the prisoners living body. The Japanese also did this to
Ozzie prisoners of war in Asia in WWII.  Nothing to do with eating :)

Thanks for the balanced response, Dieter :-). It wasn't clear whether you had
eaten it raw or cooked, lol. I'm glad it was apparently cooked, now I won't
worry about you :-).

Have a great day,

Linda :-)

Hi Linda, thanks for the warning.  The Chinese have a lot of imagination when
it comes to torture.  But I think a cut and cooked bamboo shoot can no longer
sprout.  Nevertheless, bamboo has a lot of force and has been known to
destroy walls or even buildings.  But for a person to be killed by a growing
bamboo you would have to tie up that person on top of the sprouting bamboo.

Many thanks also to Thomas and Liane.  What you say confirms my hunch that
bamboo is not toxic. Well, if you don't hear from me again, you know that my
hunch was wrong ;-)

Cheers,
Dieter
