Great point Chris-

Flies are a huge vector for disease in many areas. Natural predation will
help to control fly populations, but exclusion is the best measure.
Especially where people are sick and not able to make it to the toilet,
covering food surfaces and food may help. This is a challenging situation.

Flies will multiply like crazy in poorly sealed composting toilets, carbon
material or not. We put weather stripping under the seat to close the gaps,
or build a screen that covers the hole, which seems to work best. The toilet
really needs to be tight to actually keep flies out, all vents and openings
must be addressed.
