I've been messing around with something like a paleo diet for a couple of
months now, although I by no means a purist about it. I live alone, so I
pretty much buy and grow foods that would fit into this mode, but don't turn
down treats at gatherings. I don't buy or grow grains, and I've been
raising more animals for meat, as well as hunt during the season. I just
know that I feel better when I don't eat grains, sugars, beans, or lots of
dairy, and that grassfed meat and organs make me feel really good. It's
also better suited to eating locally year round in the Vermont climate.
I just finished reading "The Vegetarian Myth" by Lierre Keith, which was an
amazing, personal, informative book that breaks a lot of dietary taboos from
a moral, political, and nutritional standpoint. As a non-vegetarian for the
past six years, I understood many of the arguments, but the nutrition
section really helped me make further food choices. I highly recommend it to
anyone.
