All Australian beef is tagged and tracked. You can't sell any
cattle at a market unless it is tagged and registered. So every
commercial transaction involving a head of cattle is recorded.
So far Australia hasn't had any need to back-track animal
movements to trace BSE or F&M, but if the need ever does arise,
the process is trivial.

There are moves afoot to tag and track sheep as well, and so
far there is very little opposition to this plan. Most farmers
tag each individual sheep anyway, so all this plan is doing
is mandating a national standard way of doing so.

As for U.S. animals... well, you already have BSE over there
so it is absolutely critical that you be able to track the
movements of every head of cattle so you can guarantee that
it hasn't been exposed to any infected beasts or properties.

In 1999 the European Union mandated livestock identification
and traceability requirements, so if you want to sell animal
products in the EU you need such a system.

I wish you all the best in your efforts to kill off this program.
Because if you do, you won't be able to export beef into Japanese
or European markets in competition to Aussie farmers any more.

:)
