We use this same "humanure" bucket system, although presently just outside our house in a small shed. This is mostly because our house is tiny and has no "bathroom." We do have plans for a "in house" as we continue building. As we have a sawmill, sawdust is always readily available, but we do need to plan ahead for winter as piles get wet and frozen. Our system involves three buckets and a large trash can for sawdust. When two buckets are full we use the third for collection. This gives us time to empty the two full ones at our leisure. Two buckets last a week or more depending on how many people are around. An average of 3-4 people have been using this system for 5 years and we finally are filling a 4 ft. x 4 ft. x 4 ft. bin which we will let compost in place for two years before enriching our orchard/pasture with the product. Whenever we empty into the bin we cover that with some more sawdust or wood ash. As the humanure is always covered by a fresh layer of sawdust. here is no offensive odor in the outhouse or near the compost bin. If you haven't read the "Humanure Handbook" by Joeseph Jenkins I'd highly recommend it.

Good luck,

My experience of a lady in Tucson Arizona is that a simple box large enouth
to contain two 5 gallon paint buckets with a bit of room to spare is all you
need.
One bucket is used as everyone normally does, poop and pee, plus paper. then
cover all with sawdust (from the other bucket). when kept covered there is
no smell. after use I would advise striking a match to comsume all methane
in the room and for sure no smell.
now comes the harder part, the full bucket will have to be set outside and
composted in the bucket for at least a year sometimes two depending on the
weather. In rainy places keep covered.
For this one lady it was easy, for a family it would be hard.

hello permies,
have anybody of you made a 'do it yourself ' compost toilet for use
inside the house? we builded a bio cleaner for greywater cleanong
last year, and we use it now only for the washing mashine waste
water. now we want to redirect all the greywater to the cleaner and
we need to separate the toilet from the sewage, that's why the
compost toilet. we are freaks and want to use recycled materials or
find cheap materials. any expirience with this, any schemes of such
toilet, expirience with composting of feces with worms ?

thax everyone!
