Hello Patty,
many thanks for your reply. Yes it is exciting isnt't it?
I know about Robina's work and I should get in touch with her asap (I do have
her latest address I think)
I would surely have a look at any material you may have to share and/or
experience.
The thing here in Barcelona is that I do not yet know what are schools
actually doing
and how they do it. The person I met said that there are programs in most
schools
but is really difficult to evaluate how they tackle each case unless I do not
see it.
Anyway if the information I gather is detailed enough this might be useful
for them to compare
their methods with what PC people do around the world in schools.

I have seen a couple of those books from C. Nuttall and I must have written
their titles somewhere
I'll check that out too.

At the moment I submitted the preliminary document that I handed to this
school advisor to some collegues from our spanish pc network to see if
toghether we manage to create an attractive info package. The idea is to
share with the wider spanish speaking pc community through our web site
www.permacultura-es.org , once it is ready.

I'll also pass along the address of an australian collegue of ours which is
doing very interesting work
in Adelaide, using EM in schools : Jaqui Hunter hgd.com.au

What do you think is the best approach in contacting the school staff and
presenting PC?
Are the schools of your area already doing educational work on sustainability
other than permaculture?
How do you use (have used) PC: did you have like a formal PC class either
inside or outside (theory and practice). did you just do garden design or did
you also cover other topics like economy, social, appriate tech. etc.
Cheers
Antonio

Dear Antonio,
After a year of knowing about this list, and finally getting the time to
actually sign up for it, and only ONE DAY LATER your letter, which has
everything to do with my work, is sent out.... So unless I'm missing
something,
that's
real timing! I have taught Permaculture in a Montessori school for a few
years as a special. Each class would come to Permaculture on a weekly basis
for a anywhere from a 30 min. period for toddlers, to 90 min. for 5th
graders.

We had a greenhouse, several gardens with related chickens, a Food Forest in
the making, and an outdoor classroom and chicken coop built by children as
well as adults, with mostly local natural materials. We had a wonderful
time!!

The program has been on the edge of the budget, and has been cut, mainly due
to lack of funds. I will be anxious to see the response to your letter, as
I have begun an organization for the promotion and support of PC programs
for
children in schools, and spent the last few months going to conferences
doing a bit of "market research", with quite favorable results.

I will be happy to share with you pictures of our work, and would also
appreciate hearing about other schools with Permaculture programs. As part
of
my
work in promotion, I have begun writing a book about PC in schools, and am
looking for schools with PC programs to visit and document, which was my main

motivation for joining this list-serve. My website is not ready for
publishing yet, but I do have a newsletters if you are interested in those.
I
would
also refer you to Rosemary Morrow and Carolyn Nuttall in Australia. They
have
published books on their work. Also, Robina McCurdy has done extensive work
for decades, and is a tremendous resource. I can dig up the contact info
for them if you wish, and I would suggest doing searches for them online.

Thank you for your letter and jumpstarting this topic! I'm excited to hear
about your work, and looking forward to hearing about more!

Hi all,
I am trying to make up an information package to hand to schools here in
Barcelona
and see if they could be interested in introducing PC into their curriculum
somehow
I had some talk with the coordinator of the "LA21 in schools" program and
she said that they
alreday do many activities that are very similar to those proposed by
permaculture, (I was happy on one hand and somewhat frustrated on the other
...:-)
) although I doubt
that they do use a design method per se likewise permaculture suggests.

Anyway, she also asked information about schools in other parts of the world
where PC has been applied, so I am looking for this kind of information.:
documents, pictures, websites that carry this data.

I would not mind sharing the final document (in spanish) with the wider pc
community if there can be an interest.
Any help would much appreciated
Antonio
