Yes, I know about black walnuts, and have searched for all the lists of plants available to plant under them. The 5 main trees are large and nut producing and are scattered around my yard. I intend to plant something under them, because I hate to mow grass. I will definitely try the tomatillos. The lists all also say onions will grow under them, and that interests me. I will keep you posted. This past first year on the farm we have been mostly planting fruit trees and berry fruits, for eventual guilds, and digging swales, and getting hauling organic matter. The yard and walnut trees will be a challenge when we get to it, but I am sure something useful can be done. Thanks for your comments. I have been lurking for quite a while and learning a lot. Wish I could actually do a full Permaculture course, and have been hearing of the possibility of one down here in the Ozarks somewhere, in the future.

Black walnuts, as I'm sure you've learned, are fairly challenging species to guild with. Many small fruits seem to thrive amongst them. I've even found that one solanaceae (tomatillo) can actually grow under them. I'd like to hear more about your successes and failures.

Keith,

Thank you for your comments! I found the persimmon guild interesting because I am justs getting the idea of guilds and haven't worked any out for myself. That actually might not be hard because most of my trees are black walnuts and I am limited to what will grow with them. I will keep your ideas in mind, esp that these "guild plans" are just ideas, not writ in stone.
