I can't help but notice that this discussion illustrates Edgar Cayce's
principle that those qualities that annoy you in others, represent
unexamined aspects of ourselves (or as Pogo said, "we have met the enemy
and he is us.") Mark's original comments were many times more snotty than
Scott's, yet he only "noticed" snottiness in Scott's and not his own.

The real point is that permaculture is in the process of evolving and has
many different levels of expertise, thank God. One should plug in at
whatever level is appropriate and not "judge" others expertise or lack of it
(except to evaluate the quality of a source for learning purposes).

So they are both right, they just represent different ends of the learning
spectrum -- from the self-taught to one of those great teachers giving good
courses. May they all multiply, along with everyone along the continuum
between them.

Carla

I expected there would be some snotty reply, nice to not be
disappointed. My point is that the knowledge is the important part, and
that plenty of folks have it before they ever hear of PC. I don't dispute
the value of design courses per se, just wether the are really needed for
folks with a good knowledge base. BTW it took a while to get my knowledge
base, growing up with a field ecologist father provided a good start,
collage level work in soils added to it etc etc. Those with similar
backgrounds should save their money or at least take the course in Maui
during January (June for those in the global south).
