We would certainly "own" whatever we need of that server plus bandwidth,

At the time this project needs permanent hosting ibiblio might already
have the appropriate facilities. So spending $6k on buying them a server
seems even more wasteful.

That is a possibility but not anything we could remotely count on. They are
trying to raise money now for the SAN
data storage unit, other near future needs may be higher priority than a Zope server; there has to be a need for it among the ibiblio content provider community; of course if we were one of those...

I suppose you've figured out where we would get the money we would
need to pay for all this, years and years of high bandwidth

Once the code is written it's going to be a mighty impressive piece
of work. Maybe someone like ibiblio would buy and configure an
appropriate machine just to be able to host it!

Respectful silence and awe. I hear you there. :-)
However, based on past communication with them, it is highly unlikely they
would do this.
If they did it would represent a significant change in their mission and
modus operandi.
Now, you bring your content to them and if it runs on what they've got at
that time you're on.
If not, your request for the services or hardware you need goes into the
queue.
I agree that they should see it the way you've described but for now we will
have to supply that Zope
platform. I've suggested that they pursuade UNC to lease their historic Kenan
Stadium to the NFL for showcase games
with the proceeds to go to ibiblio; maybe wishful thinking .... :-)

It just baffles me why you want to donate a machine to ibiblio when
really they should be donating equipment/services to this project!

They can't afford it. But they can afford to host us indefinitely if we can
get up and running there
under our own steam, hardware-wise.

heavy traffic hosting, plenty of storage, streaming audio and video and more.

I can't see how streaming video and audio could in any significant
way enhance a database of plants or even generic pc elements.

Not early on but deintely later, videos simply the extension of still
photographs. Lots of opportunity
for enhancements there.

What, btw, do you plan to contribute to this project?

For now, some much needed focus.

Much appreciated.
