No, I see the permaculture community walking around with digital
cameras flooding HG with photos that will make the proprietary PFAF
image set obsolete.

If we can avoid having to pay them for use of their photos
that's money than can be used to pay you and Rich for ever more sophisticated and refined programming enhancements for
the PCPlantDB.

As for building a collection of photos, we should encourage them to start taking them and uploading them somewhere.
I can get PM Wiki up and running quicker than TikiWiki probably and it had secure uploads for verified users.

It can be done now with the pc wiki but the process is somewhat convoluted.

As for photos, here's a sample of the early beginnings of the sort of work I will be doing. I used to be a landscape designer and contractor and am now am a natural market farmer and permaculture practitioner/experimenter.

I plan on taking lots of plant photos including closeups, in landscape
plantings,
within guilds. I am familiar with much of the ornamental flora and am learning
about their wild relatives. I also plan to make videos, some with sound, some
macro audio/video/stills showing plant associations, interaction with
wildlife.
Some of this material will be made DVD-compatible, i.e. download it from the
DB and burn your own DVD
for home theater.

Assuming the DB will he hosted by ibiblio I called their audio/video guy
today. He offered to send me
a helpful guide for preparing photos/audio/video for display in the DB on
ibiblio. This will include such
things as how to make an mpeg that will auto-load/disply when a user clicks on it as opposed to having to download it then play it with WinMedia or RealPlayer or Quicktime.

I am especially interested in the sound & graphics media end of data
collection for the DB and plan to provide a great deal of it myself.
This is why I want to get a proper wiki up and running, so we can start allowing folks to securely upload material to a repository that will later be used in th DB. _This will necessitate that some one in pur group announce the DB to the PC list and explain that we are anxious to start collecting resources, especially plant photographs, and that they will soon have a wiki where they can put these things for later DB use and that they should know that we may want to use their photos in the DB and will need their permission to do so_. I think ther may be many collections of free plant photos that we can glean material from. The gardenwriters list will know about this so I will ask there.

Any other thoughts about this?
