I have had a Cox from them for the past 4 years.  Some years it does better
than others, but its still alive and totally healthy.  I'm mostly hoping for
flowers to cross with hardier apples as I grew up eating Cox's Orange apples
in my home town in Southern B.C. and I just love them.  One year it died back
a bunch (we had just built our new and huge house which changed the wind
patterns so it was funnelling all the cold Northwest winds right onto it) so
I let one of the rootstock buds grow instead of rubbing it off.  So now it
has a very nice tree growing from the rootstock on one side, but the Cox
above the graft is still alive and doing ok!

I would give you one caution regarding rootstocks from Cornhill: I spoke to
them about the Beautiful Arcade that their catalogue stated and was told that
they graft on BA and Antonovka depending on the year, but they never change
their catalogue so you never really know which one you will get.  So my
beautiful tree is a 'who knows what' until it fruits, but either of Beautiful
Arcade and Antonovka will be a nice addition to my collection so I don't
really care.

Cornhill is a bit annoying with their shipping: they charge an arm and a leg
and then they bend the trees over double in the box... and the trunk snaps
every time!  I always ask them to prune them off to the size of the box cuz I
get them with the broken top all leafed out and I have to prune it off
anyway.  But they claim that I'm the only one who gets these broken in half
trees,  I find that a little hard to believe.  Anyway, they have a fabulous
collection and I will order from them again cuz the Pocket Gophers took out
my Patten pear.  sigh

Subject: [nafex] Bramley and Cox's Orange Pippin Apples in the North

  Hello,

I was reviewing some spring catalogs and came across a Canadian nursery
in New Brunswick selling Bramley and Cox's Orange Pippin (among many
other varieties). They're grafted on Russian "Beautiful-Arcade"
rootstock. Technically the nursery is in the same zone as I am (Ag Can
4b). I contacted the owner and he told me they've been growing them
sucessfully there for 30 years.

I would absolutely love to have either of these apples. However, I am
still wary about these types being hardy here because previouly I had
been advised that they would not survive. I have already lost a  Golden
Russet here, although it was an unusual winter/ spring. I have Priscilla
and Reine de Reinette growing at the moment.

Any thoughts?

What are early-ripening temperate/northern fruit crops (minor and major) that
ripen before July in zones 5-7?
The only ones that I am aware of are:

Strawberries (cultivated and wild) - in June
Juneberries (Serviceberries, Saskatoons, etc.) - In June
Blueberries (i.e. cv. 'Earliblue')
[?]Black-raspberries (i.e. cv. 'Jewel' - late June?)

Secondly, what are the July-ripening fruit crops (minor and major)? Note:
only some varieties of the following ripen in July...

Sweet-cherries
Blueberries
Apricot
Peaches & Nectarines
Blackberries & Black-raspberries
Apple
Figs? (cv.?)

Please add any you are aware of to the above two schedules.

Thanks,
Steve; NJ
