Miller's Nursery is way off target here on their recommendations for Seckel
Pears. Emphasizing that Seckel needs TWO different pollinators is bizarre.
Every reference I have seen for Seckel state it is one of the few pears that
is somewhat self-fruitful.

I grow a larger version of the Seckel called a Worden Seckel and have had
no issues with pollination, although it is the only pear tree in my garden.
It has been giving small numbers of fruit since planting it in 2007, but this
year it really took off. I had to do lots of thinning to keep the numbers
down. Because of not seeing many insects around, I did some hand
pollination on itself, which may have added to this years production.
There are some pear trees in neighbor's yards, but my feeling is that
my Seckel was not cross pollinated with them due to the lack of insects.

The Seckel is a wonderful pear for taste. I am getting more into pears this
year and plan to plant a Morettini and Clara Frije pear trees I grafted last
year.

Here's what I've found out so far about pears. Lon - thanks for the
recommendation of Seckel

Looks like most pears require a pollinator, so the idea of a single pear
tree is out. According to some sources (MIller's Nursery) Seckel
actually requires TWO different varieties other than itself. Anyone have
actual experience with this?

I'm looking at a variety called Clapp's Favorite. It fruits a month
earlier than pears such as Seckel and Beurre D'Anjou and yet apparently
can pollinate and be pollinated by these. Has anyone grown or eaten a
Clapp's? I'm wondering if it is great for fresh eating.

So I'm torn between trying to go with Seckel and only one other
pollinator and have all my pear trees ripen at the same time (or else
have Seckel not fruit at all) or to go with Clapp's and DAnjou and have
the season spread out. Danjou looks like it is good for storage though,
so I could keep those maybe for a number of months.

Help! Have I missed any other great pears?

I'm glad you guys understand this fruit thing. I could never explain
this to my friends, let alone get any sympathy!

Jay

Any suggestions for the best fresh eating pear? We're looking for
something for our front yard, probably a single tree. Ornamental
qualities would be a plus, such as fall color or a red pear. My main
interest, though, is one that will taste great. Are all pears pretty
equal on this or does anyone have any recommendations?

I have a friend wondering if she can use Royaltry crab-apples for jelly.
Anyone have personal experience? My Royalty tree is still sitting in its 5
gallon pot awaiting transplanting! lol

She's too far away for me to taste them for her, but my guess was that if
they are high in tannin (as judged by tasting) that they won't make good
jelly.
