Thought I'd sent this weeks ago; found it in saved drafts. Grimes, Hudson, and Fiesta all have good reputations for disease resistance and great flavor. I looked at all three closely before deciding on others that might do better in my neighborhood (E. WA, z6), and understand Wolf River to be fairly bland but disease resistant and productive (mostly a cooking apple, I've heard). Can't speak for Gravenstein as having any disease resistance, but is one of my favorites for eating. May I suggest Liberty? I just picked my first crop and they are winners, with several disease resistances. The tree tends to grow slowly and can be whippy, so some patience in letting it develop wood before much fruit is advised, but it's worth it. I am waiting for my first crop of Ashmead's Kernel, in a couple more weeks. This tree is scab resistant, incredibly hardy (have read people glad to grow it from Edmonton, BC to Riverside, CA (SE of LA) and its apples are big on flavor, if not big fruits. I can hardly wait. Some under consideration for grafting into my yard that have big taste and at least scab resistance, and even some historic interest: Karmijn de Sonnaville & Golden Russet (just tasted both for 1st time: Wow!) [Haven't yet tasted:] Tydeman's Late Orange Zabergäu Renette Erwin Baur Duchess of Oldenburg Belle de Boskoop Edward VII (for cooking) Lord Lambourne D'Arcy Spice (should do well in my poor, sandy soil; very slow growing tree with fruit that needs hot summers to develop flavor: got that part here). Have fun, Dave Liezen Date: Sat, 2 Oct 2010 14:51:23 -0400 From: debs913@gmail.com To: nafex@lists.ibiblio.org Subject: [NAFEX] Apple suggestions I am looking to add several apple trees and these are my first round picks: Gravenstein
Grimes Golden
Smokehouse
Wolf River
Hudson's Golden Gem
Fiesta I am in SE Ohio, zone 6 with very heavy clay soil most of it sloped. I am looking for 1) apples with excellent flavor for fresh eating 2) interesting apples for sauce and cooking 3) disease resistance
I am also looking for suggestions for crab apples good for canning and making jelly.
Thanks!
