One needs to make sure that the Grimes is on a rootstock or
interstem resistant to collar rot, to which it is notoriously susceptible.
Otherwise, it’s a wonderful apple. – Sam Brungardt, St. Paul, Minn. (USDA
Hardiness Zone 4b) From:

Behalf Of david liezen Grimes,
Hudson, and Fiesta all have good reputations for disease
resistance and great flavor. I looked at all three closely before deciding
on others that might do better in my neighborhood (E. WA, z6), and understand
Wolf River to be fairly bland but disease resistant and productive (mostly a
cooking apple, I've heard). Can't speak for Gravenstein as having any disease
resistance, but is one of my favorites for eating. Date:

Golden Smokehouse Wolf
River Hudson's
Golden Gem Fiesta I
am in SE Ohio, zone 6 with very heavy clay soil most of it sloped. I am
looking for 1) apples with excellent flavor for fresh eating 2)
interesting apples for sauce and cooking 3) disease resistance I
am also looking for suggestions for crab apples good for canning and making
jelly. Thanks! deb
