Not to sound pagan, but I'm stoking my boiler with black-locust right
now. It's the best firewood that can be had around here, and I use it
when I'm feeling lazy and don't want to tend the fire all night long. I have 50 seedlings on order from the Pennsylvania State Nursery for planing in my wood lot to ensure warm feet 20 or so years from now. Yes, they do make the best fence posts and the like too. I'm using them for trellis posts in my orchard. Trunks (even when split) for posts last longer than any other wood here. But small trunks or saplings, and stake diameter branches, rot faster than you'd think a rot-resistant wood should. But the cut plants regrow so fast, you just replace the stakes. Zero toxicity as far as I know, except avoid the thorns in the growing season. If labor is a major issue, know purchased treated posts may last longer than small diameter locust. tc, sWI, where black locust grows better than anything else_______________________________________________ nafex mailing list nafex@lists.ibiblio.org Reproduction of list messages or archives is not allowed.
