Here is the response from Dr. Bob Bors re: Haskaps. Bob is in charge of
this program at the University of Saskatchewan.

I think there is a bit of confusion because the University of
Saskatchewan
is often abbreviated as U of S, and a fast reader might think of it as
US or
US of A.

When Ernest said:
Read on University of Sask site that US will allow Canadian propagators
to
ship haskap plants to US in 2010. It would be correct if he said:
Read on University of Sask site that University of Saskatchewan will
allow
Canadian propagators to ship haskap plants to US in 2010.

In a quick glance on the website I couldn't find which document Ernest
was
referring to. If the Doc does state US instead of U of SK, please tell
him
to contact me with the specifics so I can change it. In more recent
documents I have been trying to abbreviate with "U of SK" to avoid
confusion.

There are no details about fees because it is up to the individual
propagator if they want to charge more for international shipments.
I have not yet seen the proposed contract changes. I believe the
contract
will state that the Canadian propagators may sell directly to farmers
and
non-propagating nurseries or homeowners. They will only be able to sell
Borealis and Tundra, not the unnamed test selections. When a new
pollinator
is release this summer they will also be allowed to sell that too.

If an American nursery wants to propagate our varieties, then they
should
contact me. Yes, I Suppose American Nurseries could just rip off these
new
varieties. Likely free trade laws would be violated. However, we have
20,000
seedlings from controlled crosses in the next generation of Haskap which
we
expect to see even more improvements. We plan to keep our friends ahead
of
the game with the latest varieties.

Unlike many other fruit breeding programs run by USDA or Ag Canada, the
U of
SK program gets $0 of automatic annual funding. We rely heavily on
royalties
and grants from outside sources that typically last 2 or 3 years to keep
things going. Also, I personally get no share of the royalties. Instead
most
of the money from royalties goes directly to the program with a small%
going
to our department. I sincerely hope that nurseries in the USA will
chose to
support our breeding efforts by collecting royalties in the future,
should
they want to propagate our varieties.

Read on University of Sask site that US will allow Canadian
propagators to ship haskap plants to US in 2010. This is sort of
ambiguous. Can US customers have haskaps sent to them from Canada or
does it mean US nurseries can import haskaps from Canada? Doesn't
say if fees or licensing are involved. Anyone know?
