Sea-buckthorn is in a different genus; it is Hippophae rhamnoides and has nothing in common with the others but the common name as far as I know.
Purging buckthorn (from Europe) is Rhamnus cathartica. I've seen it on sandy loam and on clay; it's versatile and hard to stop. The nasty thorns mean that you have to be careful how you grab it.

has a good summary of this plant. I grow cultivated varieties that produce better fruit than shown in the pictures. NAFEX has an interest group that includes this plant, headed by Mr. Black, I believe.

Sorry. I missed your location. I'm in sWI and see honeysuckle & 2
species of invasive-exotic buckthorn on light soil in dry woods & degraded
prairie
& old-field sites. What is the edible buckthorn you grow?
About robins, I have to wonder if they aren't seeking moisture. I never
see them at the bird-baths, but then I don't watch all day. I wonder if
when they can't get enough juicey earthworms, cutworms, grubs, etc., then
they must feed on juicey berries. Any bird watchers on the list who know
about
this?
