I'm assuming the tripod ladders are used more than a typical A-frame
because it's easier to get into the middle of the trees? Is that a
correct assumption?

The commercial wooden tripod ladders I have seen in Ontario have the
side pieces and the rungs reinforced with metal rods, which add safety
and might be difficult for a home builder or carpenter to do.
The aluminum ladders are expensive but very strong and should last a
lifetime if not longer.
