Mark,

Yeah, you are right, but combinations of captan and sulfur can cause
necrotic spotting on leaves of susceptible varieties (e.g., Jonathan,
MacIntosh), so I usually tell growers not to mix the two.
Captan is more effective on scab than sulfur anyway, so I'm with you....I'm
not sure why anyone would want to do this anyway.

Dennis,

The Michigan tree fruit spray guide shows Captan and sulfur compatible.
Captan is sulfur based, so one could probably overdo it by adding too much
sulfur to the Captan (I'm not sure why anyone would want to do this anyway)
but the list shows it is compatible. Are you sure your not thinking of Lime
Sulfur which is incompatible because of the alkalinity? The spray guide
also shows sulfur is fully compatible with the organophosphates including
Malathion.

I know that you cannot mix Captan and Sulfur, but you can mix Captan and
Malathion, which are 2 of the products in Bonide's Fruit Tree Spray. My
rule of thumb is "When in doubt, don't!" But to be correct, try the jar
test by mixing the appropriate rates in a quart jar to test compatibility.
Then spray some on a test tree or part of a tree to see if there are
phytotoxicity issues.
