Hallo Michele,
let me just tell additionally.
Mr. Lee Reich is very right,
Jostaberries are developed at Germany in the 20th and 50th and some are also very new.
They are more vigorously, usually very resistant, but to harvest is not very nice (in comparison).
Never machine harvesting. Late frost may be a problem.
Jocheline: Silvergieter's Black x Green Riesen,
Jogranda: Langtraubige Schwarze x Ribes divaricatum
Josta: ( Langtraubige Schwarze x Ribes divaricatum) x (Silvergieter's Black x Green Hansa)
Jostine: " " better taste
Rikö: Silvergieter's Black x Ribes uva crispa "Lady Delamere"
Jonova: reddish color, very new, Dr. Bauer
ciao

My Jostaberry bushes are 4 years old now and producing well. I would like to compare mine to some of the newer cultivars out there. Is anyone else in the Midwest growing any of the new black-red currant hybrids that are available?
For those who haven't experienced this fruit, it is tart but delicious, there are no major pests or diseases, and they grow in my unamended clay soil like champs. The fruit is a dark purplish black and my guess is that its high in anthocynanins. My only complaint is that harvest is laborious as most strigs are composed of 1-3 berries. BUt I would recommend them to anyone needing a deciduous shrub in an edible landscape, and they are also easily grown organically.
Michele
