We had much better luck with the growers who used ammonium nitrate than with
those who used urea. We recommended the March date for the fertilizer and 3
applications for young trees but none past July 1st to avoid winter damage
which some growers experienced some years.
It was reported that a fall or winter application was just as effective on
old bearing trees as a spring one but why chance losing some of it to
leaching. We like to see at least 1 inch of rain on the fertilizer before
the growth gets too far along.
