Hi Stephen,

I wonder if nylon "footies" would deter the squirrels. The nylon would
allow the fruit to breathe a little better. This year squirrels stripped my
neighbor's Bartlett. Interestingly, they didn't touch his Duchess pears.

Here's my bagging experience. My Red Bartlett had a few pears this year and
I bagged half of them with stocking "footies." The bags protected them from
codling moth. However, it seemed the unbagged ones were a little bigger
than the bagged. Is this my imagination, or could the shading from the
nylon inhibit fruit growth?

I tried to bag my pomegranates this year to keep the squirrels from getting
all of them. Some bags were vented at one corner, some at both. The
squirrels left them alone. However, so did I. Pomegranates don't care for
being bagged, but black mold is very fond of the conditions, with mold
beginning at the calyx basin and spreading. The double-vented fruit was
probably salvageable, although the skin was unappealing in areas; but with
my allergies, I wouldn't want to deal with the mold.
