If you have leftover Fallgold that became unproductive, you definitely want to get rid of them before trying any other Rubus spp. in the vicinity since you are probably hosting lots of viruses.

To add to that, the plant is prohibited in Massachusetts.  See the link below

Regarding your comment on being hesitant to plant brambles, reference the following link for the problems with wineberries, Rubus phoenicolasius.  They sound great, but can become a nuisance.

Thanks for the suggestions from all of you.

Refining my thoughts as follows:
1] There's an unfruitful wild grape volunteer going up one of the red pines.
BIG.  I have had a domestic vine growing at the base of the other with little
growth.  I'm thinking of moving it further away from the base of the tree [its
now close to the base of the tree] and stringing it up to the first branches
of the red pine to offer it a means of climb, thinking the domestic one is
discouraged by its close proximity to the base.  Good idea?
2]  I do have several mulberries.  These are normally considered trees, I
don't know how they'd react by being kept shorter as understory to the red.  Any
chance they'd fruit in the half-sun and being cut back?
3]  I have an Ornablue blueberry I propagated I could move out to be in the
dripline of the reds.  Does anyone think Ornablue can produce in less than full
sun?
4]  I suppose all brambles spread like crazy?  I'm a little reluctant to
plant any bramble because we still have a few hangover FallGold planted in about
1972 that became unproductive in about 1980.   I suppose they could be
smothered out, but I'm afraid to start with anything.  Should I be afraid of plating
in some brambles?
Thanks,
Charlie Paradise in Massachusetts
