I'll just throw my limited plum experience in, that the local P.
americanum are very delicious and productive and disease free for the
most part. And from the small growers at the local farmer's market, my
favorites are 'Toka' (small medium dark red, very very flavorful and
sweet with a hint of cherry) and 'Duarte' (medium purple red very
juicy and honey like). SE Michigan zone 5.

Hi Deb,
Keep in mind that large commercial growers will have varieties that serve
their business plan and financial needs. You may find a much better plum
for small scale needs.
Say a plum tastes great, is disease resistant, but does not ship cross
cuntry well. You will never taste that peach at a large commercial
orchard.
Just something to think about. Your desires may not align with commercial
growers. You may have to look hard for the plum that meets your needs.
Later,
Tom
