I used to buy Akanes grown in upstate NY. They looked and tasted a lot like a small, early Jonathan. I liked the apple a lot, and bought them for fresh eating and for pies. It was good for both. (Although the size meant a lot of peeling for the pies.) I don't remember if we ever tried it for sauce.
