Hi Doreen. Freedom here are dimpled (not apple maggot fly), not pleasant
looking bland yellow with reddish streaks and mealy. Flavour is bland. The
only redeeming factor is that they are juicy and supposedly good juice
apples.

We have been most impressed with Novamac. Bright red, hard, juicy,
absolutely scab immune and not as bothered by insects as the macs planted
nearby. We have a 150 Novamacs that are 4 years old. Our goal is to
renovate our 1,000 tree orchard to hardy apple varieties that show good scab
resistance. To date we have planted Freedom, Redfree, Liberty and Novamac.
Planned are Sandow, Princess Louise, Tolman, Wealthy, Duchess and Golden
Russet. Disease resistance plays a key role in our organic strategy.

On a slightly different matter has anyone had any experience with Balsor
blackberries??? We are planting a couple hundred next year on the merits of
what we've heard about them.

Regards,

Gord Hawkes
