I was once up in a 100-year-old apple tree, chainsawing off a large dead
branch. I happened to look inside, and there were two big eyes looking up
at me. A screech owl. I've since decided to leave most of the old dead
trunks and branches to hollow out for wildlife homes. With regular logging
around here, there aren't that many large old trees in the wild with
hollows.
Your tree is not rotted through yet, but it probably will be later.
