I was just reading an old book on concrete, and it showed a tree with a big
dead area, they chiseled it down to sound wood and filled in the hollow with
concrete. It was a very neat job, and probably helped support the tree, but
it would be best to find out if that is actually recommended. There was
another photo of a tree that had been done that way, and the bark had grown
over most of the repair, they said eventually it would entirely fill in.
