Subject: [nafex] Re: Dead wood on apple tree

I understand filling a tree with an inner rotten part with concrete
but what about this tree where the rotten part is totally on the
outside with no nooks or crannies to collect water, just dead wood on
a totally vertical trunk. Half is dead half is alive, now, will the
live part start creeping around to engulf the dead part? I can't see
this happening except on small trees whereas this one is already
about 8" in diameter. Thanks for your replies, wish I could draw a
picture.
Kevin

Hi Kevin:

What would be so terribly wrong with carefully scraping off all the
dead bark and punk wood, then spraying the butt/trunk with a good tree
paint or paint with tree paint. Then maybe a good heavy paper tree wrap.
I have used both practices on problem trees the combination of cement,
wire and then a week later after the cement has cured, tree paint or
spray tree paint. The tree covers the cement in time callousing over
the edge and incorporating that into it's structure. You may have to
paint or spray every few months or so until the tree re-heals but it
does work.
You might just get this tree back.... Hope that's something to chew on.

Too bad you don't have a picture?
Best wishes,
John
