There's a big old American beech on one of the main streets here in Hoptown
that has a large cavity, about 10-15 feet up the trunk, that has been
filled in with concrete - been there longer than I've been living here;
tree appears to be doing just fine.
Ken Asmus has a photo of the MI champion bur oak in his 1999 OIKOS Tree
Crops catalog; the tree has a large cavity extending up from ground level -
at some point in time, someone filled it in with cinderblocks (it doesn't
look as though they used any mortar), and over time, the tree is slowly
engulfing them - as Ken says, "a good chainsaw deterrent"!
