Agreed: heads only May - September. Salad mix is easier in the high tunnels in fall/winter/spring. but still a pain.
My "go-to" varieties for summer production, tried-and true through heat, drought, etc: Magenta Sierra Mikola (Turtle Tree) Canasta (Turtle Tree) Slogun (Turtle Tree) Concept ( all but the hottest weeks) Oscarde works. Tropicana Pablo- new to us last year, it rocked. Have stopped growing romaine in July as it was a magnet for Tarnish Bug. But the batavians/summercrisps don't attract them. We grow summer lettuce under shade cloth with drip irrigation. Don't try it without both! I start flats indoors every week, so it is always in production. I am glad to hear I am not the only one. I can not harvest full bed, I have too many weed seed in my soil. It takes too much time to pick them out of the mix after I harvest and before. What I have found that works for me is to transplant in lettuce, every 8 to 12 inches, 3 or 4 rows per 3 or 4 foot bed. Then I just harvest the bigger outside leaves and let the rest grow. This way I can easily weed. I also can pick twice a week, during the peak growing season. This year I am switching over to loose leaf mini heads and Romaine heads. I was selling out of those last year at every market when I wasn't selling salad mix. The labor is way less

We grow/sell salad mix every week, but nothing close to a 100 pounds a week. I would love to see all the information posted here. I think we could all learn from it. _______________________________________________ Market-farming mailing list Market-farming AT lists.ibiblio.org http://lists.ibiblio.org/mailman/listinfo/market-farming Market Farming List Archives may be found here: https://lists.ibiblio.org/sympa/arc/market-farming/ Unsubscribe from the list here (you will need to login in with your email address and password): http://lists.ibiblio.org/mailman/options/market-farming _______________________________________________ Market-farming mailing list Market-farming AT lists.ibiblio.org http://lists.ibiblio.org/mailman/listinfo/market-farming Market Farming List Archives may be found here: https://lists.ibiblio.org/sympa/arc/market-farming/ Unsubscribe from the list here (you will need to login in with your email address and password): http://lists.ibiblio.org/mailman/options/market-farming |
