People I've spoken with in our market (suburban Chicago) say that after taking credit/debit they increased overall sales by 15-20%. They also say that it increases the higher priced items as many people don't carry large amounts of cash around here, especially as you get closer to the city itself.

Can anyone tell me how much more they make by taking credit cards vs. not? I have a tracphone only, and two banks within rock- chucking distance of our stand. If people are short on cash, that is how far they have to go to get more.

My guess is that this depends a great deal on where you are. I sell at two different markets and very rarely get asked if we take credit cards, which we don't; and don't think I've ever lost a sale over this. (We do take checks, and get one or more checks more weeks than not. I've never had one bounce.)

I do occasionally have someone say they need to go get cash; both markets are within two blocks or less of an ATM.

At some markets, however, it may make a difference.
