I have a 1/2 bushel basket with a rope strap tied to it that I put over my
shoulder to carry the transplants at my hip. I've popped out the
transplants first of course and put them in the basket..I can carry a couple
of 72 count trays worth of transplants at a time. We do have a homemade
wooden "tray" that my husband made that will hold one 1020 tray size at a
time that I can also carry the tray w/strap over my shoulder to carry the
plug tray itself but I found this harder to use than popping out the
transplants first and putting in a basket.

Used this in many different soil types. It works best in more sandy soil.
The only trouble I have had is it does not work well in the rain. The tube
inside gets wet and the bill gets muddy and the transplants stick inside.
In more clay soil we have had to go back down the row and "tuck-in" some of
the transplants that the soil did not fall back around. After using it for
a while you get the motion down pretty good and there is less of that
needed.

How do you transport/feed from trays to make it aone person job?? How
heavy/light is your soil?

>>On a tangential note: anybody has experience with the Hatfield
transplanter? There was a discussion about it on this list last year, and
the reviews where mixed. >>I am on the fence about getting one, but I guess
my back would certainly appreciate if I did! Which size would work for
transplanting 72 and 50 plugs?

Don't have experience with the Hatfield but would recommend a
"Stand-n-Plant". We have three of the planters and three of the seeders.
The larger ones I transplanted 72s up to 32s without issue. I love the
stand-n-plant because it is one person/one hand operation to use and your
other hand is free to load it. Much better in my opinion than having to use
two hands and two people like the Hatfield requires.
