We sell eggs for $5/dozen but don't think they are profitable in themselves.
We
continue to do them because they have value outside of any profit or loss. We
pasture them, moving them around our fields all summer, adding to the soil
and
attracting attention from passer-bys and from the local media.
Also, people come to the farm or join the csa specifically for our eggs. We
may
not make money directly from the eggs but we do indirectly. Some come for the
eggs but buy our veggies and dairy.
$5 may sound like a lot to some but we sell out everyday, especially since
the
recent salmonella outbreak. People get visibly upset when we do not have any
eggs.

I quit poultry 10 years ago after a 30 year run I did the chicken bit...
Today
XL brown eggs wholesale for $1.80 mediums are $1.08 in the northeast US. So
you
can see what your competeing against. I used to figure it cost me $3.00 to
raise
a chick to pullet. And I figured 2-3 pounds of commercial layer mash per
dozen
eggs for housed chickens depending on the time of the year. A couple of grey
areas in figuring costs is the time between small eggs to the most profitable
large grade. Another sticky point is between moults. Its good to time a
forced
molt to get the whold flock to molt together. I can't stress enough to find a
good feed dealer most today cater to hobby farmers and rip you off... Bob.
