I have never had any real success with getting cucumber vines to climb
vertical trellises. I generally allow cucumber vines to sprawl and they
usually do OK with the exception that a lot get missed by my PYO customers.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
That is the PYO business, as long as there is fruit that is in plain sight and easy to get at your average "townie" is going to take it and move on. It is just as true in berries as it is in veggies. Put you own crew, or the serious re-sellers in behind them, or plant a lot extra.

If I could get them off the ground I think I could recover some of these
losses.

At the greenhouse I was using strings from the crop supports and plant clips (Illustration: http://www.hydro-gardens.com/growsup1.htm ) with great results, although labor intensive and last year I put up some 8 foot high posts in the garden for doing the same system . What I learned that outside the wind moves the fruits causing scaring, I got almost no good looking cucumbers.. Like you I have never had any luck asking vine crops to climb fence or trellis netting. Lets hope someone here has some secrets!
