"Guns, Germs and Steel" by Jared Diamond is an excellent book and deserved
the Pulitzer Prize it earned. The question Diamond attempts to answer is;
why Eurasian civilization advanced more quickly and became dominant
worldwide as opposed to Native American, African or Island cultures? He
convincingly demonstrates that race was not a factor and shows the role of
ecology, climate and geography in supplying the near east with advantages in
food production. Food surpluses set the stage for other advances in
population and technology. These advantages then spread to Europe and Asia.
A short summary cannot do the book justice. It is a powerful argument
against racism and ethnocentrism and a great read.
